The town of Livermore Falls has indeed found itself in a different situation on July 1. While I do not agree with all that the selectmen are hoping to accomplish, saving some money in order to improve our roads and equipment, while avoiding a tax increase and projecting a tax decrease, sounds very logical.
When they say the people were not offered a choice, the opposition is way off the mark. When we vote on our school budget or a state bond issue, we only have a “yes” or “no” option. At our town meeting, for every penny in each of the articles, there is an opportunity for a choice available in the form of an amendment.
Therefore, the attendees had well over 83 million choices they could have made. It baffles me that the opposition did not use some of these options. The warrant articles could have been amended to provide interim funding for the town departments while a revised warrant was being drawn up. The self-appointed vocal leaders of this group are all attendees of past town meetings and should be fully aware of the process.
What was their objective? To cripple town government and make the selectmen look bad?
Talk about short-sightedness and fear mongering, all to maintain the ever more expensive status quo.
I certainly hope that the Livermore Falls High School is full to capacity on July 10.
