This year is almost over, 2006 is about to begin. What the new year will bring, no one knows.

For starters, I’m praying that people everywhere begin the process of treating one another with respect. It wouldn’t solve all problems, but it would go a long way in defusing already volatile situations. Bombings, riots and harsh words escalate the cycle of violence, anger and frustration.

Whether at home or abroad, treating others with the same respect with which we wish to be treated will make a big difference. When someone lashes out at another, they are sending the message that others are insignificant and less than worthwhile. Harsh deeds and words can be forgiven, but the damage has been done. Why perpetuate such a cycle?

The holiday season usually places heavier demands on our time and energy. The busier we become, there is more of a tendency to experience a change in temperament. Sometimes, the results are impatience and disrespect toward others who don’t respond the way we want them to. Minor issues become major problems.

Jesus said to “love one another as I love you.” This encompasses respect for others as well. Not one of us is created to be perfect, so how can we expect perfection from others. However, we can practice thinking before we act or speak. This shows great respect.

Respect is as necessary as breathing. People will be happier and more cooperative. Problems will be solved and overcome.
