I am having a difficult time understanding how the Auburn City Council and mayor could vote to take money from some of our citizens who are already struggling to buy good food and medications and who will go cold this winter because of the price of heating oil. They are taking the money from the poor and giving it to a person who has more than most of the persons living here by building a parking garage.

That seems morally wrong to me.

If I were the person who was to receive the benefit, I would refuse to take it, knowing this.

How can this be happening here in Auburn? Why didn’t Councilman M. Kelly Matzen abstain from voting? After all, his partner in law is also a partner with developer Tom Platz, who will benefit the most from the garage.

Matzen should have abstained.
