“Peace and justice are two sides of the same coin,” said Dwight D. Eisenhower.
If you want peace, work for justice. We’re too young to have secured the guarantees of the Magna Carta. Our more recent ancestors brought an end to the injustice of slavery. Few of us would have been old enough to demand the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote. Most of us didn’t march for safety in the mills and mines, or work with Dr. King for the voting rights of African-Americans. And maybe that spirit of Jean Jacques Rouseau cries out for some to personally affirm the rights of man.
Well, all is not lost. On Nov. 8, we can go to the polls and affirm that the great state of Maine is among that group of humanity that will not tolerate discrimination. We can vote no on Question 1. Our children will be proud we did our part to move humanity forward.
