I write first to say how much we enjoy reading the Sun Journal while in Andover in August. Your national and international news coverage, as well as your local news coverage, are very informative and well-written, as are your editorials.
Your coverage of tractor-trailer owner-operator Scott Hewitt’s tragic accident, his abysmally bad driving record and the state’s resulting crackdown on vehicle operation by those whose licenses have been suspended many times has been especially thorough.
There is another side to the universe of tractor-trailer owner-operators that is important to point out: that is the many very responsible ones whose professionalism shines through and who are worthy of special note as the reports from the Hewitt case and the crackdown in its aftermath continue.
These owner-operators are deeply concerned with safety and responsible operation of their rigs. They do all in their power to assure the safety of the driving public and of themselves and are a credit to their profession.
I had occasion to profile one of these owner-operators, Natalie Burnham, in my editorial page column in the Wilton (Conn.) Bulletin. My series of columns focuses for 11 months of the year on events in Wilton, Conn. However, in August each year it focuses on Andover, Maine, which we visit each year at this time. This year, there are three columns on Wilton, and one of them, the one just published today, describes Natalie’s work as an owner-operator.
With thanks for your thorough and informative reporting,
Stephen M. Hudspeth,
Wilton, Conn
