Farmers market open Sundays

OES to honor veterans 

WALES — Lakeside Chapter, OES, will honor veterans at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 14, at the Masonic Building, 233 Centre Road. Light refreshments will be served after the meeting.

The women will be in colored gowns for the meeting and the men in tuxedos or dark suits. All members and Eastern Star visitors are welcome.

Seniors to have Thanksgiving dinner

AUBURN — The First Auburn Senior Citizens will meet on Wednesday, Nov. 15, for a Thanksgiving dinner at the Carriage House. Doors will open at 10:30 a.m. Those attending must have a ticket. Entertainment will be provided by Maine-ly Harmony.

There were 48 members present at the last meeting. New members were Brenda Chaplin, Laurie Paradis and Pat Ross. Attendance winners were Larry Castner and Jan Biron; pot of gold, Diane Vincent, Sarah Theriault and Carol Layton; 50/50, Diane Vincent, Bee Brooks and Sarah Theriault.

Learn how to play chess

AUBURN — The Auburn Public Library, 49 Spring St., will sponsor a chess for beginners program. Chess instructor Kenneth Cox will start the chess class for beginners at 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16. The class will meet at 4 p.m. every Thursday.

The class is for those who have an interest in the game and have never played before or those want to go through a review of the basics. It will start with the chess board set-up, then go into how the pawns and king moves.

In future sessions, participants will learn how to move all the pieces and discuss the strategic concepts of chess. Participants will learn what “checkmate” actually means and how to develop the checkmate positions.

Chess is believed to have originated in India sometime before the 7th century. The pieces assumed their current powers in Spain in the late 15th century; the rules were finally standardized in the 19th century.

Participants should bring a pencil and paper if they want to take notes. If they have a chess set to bring along that would be helpful but is not required. The program is open to teens and older who are beginner players.

WWI presentation at Society

NEW GLOUCESTER — Jason C. Libby will present “World War I, Maine and A Local Hero” at the next meeting of the New Gloucester Historical Society.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at the New Gloucester Meetinghouse, 389 Intervale Road next to the Town Hall on Route 231.

The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

County Democratic Committee meeting

LEWISTON — The Androscoggin County Democratic Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at the offices of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, 238 Goddard Road.

The meeting will focus on labor issues. Mary Roussel, a member of the National Treasury Employees Union, will moderate a listening session and panel presentation that will include a representative from the Maine AFL-CIO, who will address legislation affecting workers and their families.

There will also be a special presentation by Allan Shepard, IBEW’s training director, on IBEW’s apprenticeship program.

All are invited to participate in the discussion with comments and questions.
