It is time that “supporting our troops” means more than slapping a yellow ribbon sticker to the back of your SUV.

It is time to show support for the troops by bringing them home in something other than flag-draped coffins. It is time to call for the impeachment of George Bush, Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney.

While Mary Jane Newell laments the weakness of the Republican Party (June 22), she ignores that conservatives as well as progressives are fed up. This administration has lied about every conceivable aspect of the mission in Iraq. A lie that has killed 1,700 American troops, cost hundreds of billions of dollars (I could use health insurance) and tarnished the name of the United States for generations.

While no one can tell us why we are in Iraq, there is no doubt that we have provided our enemies with an invaluable training ground to sharpen their tactics against us. Just as the first war in Iraq served as inspiration for the attack on the Twin Towers, there is no doubt that the seeds of the next Sept. 11 will have been planted in Iraq.

It is clear to me that this administration has given far more aid and ammunition to the enemy than progressive dissent. It is time to change our tactics and it is time to change our leadership.
