I recently picked up Maine’s “Open Water Fishing Regulations” when purchasing my fishing license. On page 1, there is a photo of Gov. Baldacci and his message to fishermen. To quote a portion: “Where else but Maine can you fish in over 6,000 lakes and ponds and 32,000 miles of rivers and streams for gamefish such as brook trout, landlocked salmon and smallmouth bass.” It goes on to say how our license dollars are used to enhance fishing opportunities.
If you then turn to page 4, the headline is “Warning About Eating Freshwater Fish” and “WARNING: Some Maine waters are polluted, requiring additional limits to eating fish,” with a listing of those that are especially susceptible, including the Androscoggin River.
Maybe it’s ironic that I picked this up the same day an article about the Androscoggin River appeared in the Sun Journal (May 17), and the fact that the state once again sided with the paper companies was reported. Do the math, it all adds up.
