I am writing to protest the Sun Journal applying the label of “Christian” to describe the people working against our Legislature’s extending equal protection to gays and lesbians.
I was baptized into the Presbyterian Church and have been an active member and commissioned minister of the United Church of Christ for decades, pastoring the church in Locke Mills for three years some time ago.
The Jesus I follow went beyond the narrow legalism of Leviticus to break Jewish law by healing on the Sabbath, by talking with the Samaritan woman at the well, and by eating with tax collectors. He told us to love our neighbor as ourselves.
By Jesus’ standards, those demonstrators do not deserve the label “Christian” without some appropriate modifier.
