After reading the letter April 16, “Safety first,” by Bruce Wotton, I feel the need to reply. That was a great letter, and he is so right. Some streets definitely need major repairs. An area on Central Avenue from Campus Avenue to Russell Street is especially bad.

We are ashamed when people from out of state come to visit students at Bates College and come for games. That section of Central Avenue is appalling. The sides of the street are all broken down, full of water and mud and cave-ins. I’m sure those Bates students pay enough for college, they deserve much better. Whether it’s the responsibility of the city or Bates, what are they waiting for? We drive by there every day and find it shameful.

Also, problems with trash and especially dog waste need to be addressed. With the nice weather coming, I have already see those cool people with their big black dogs and suddenly they stop and the dog leaves his mark. It’s disgusting.

This needs to be dealt with. When we walk, we have to watch so we don’t step in it. It is a big problem. I heard we do have a pooper-scooper law, but no enforcement of it, so come on Lewiston, if you want to attract visitors here, get on the ball. We need enforcement.
