I am writing concerning the Palesky tax-cap referendum. We all know that our tax burden is too high and that something needs to be changed. We have listened to our so-called representatives give lip service to this fact for far too long.

Even with Palesky looming in the near future, the 121st Legislature failed to act on this pressing matter. People are up in arms; they are fed up with the status quo, the lack of action and the seeming disregard for the problem.

Out of this frustration and anger came the Palesky idea. People who are taxed to the point of breaking will vote for anything that promises some relief. Unfortunately, this scheme will devastate Maine. Our public services will be decimated, our schools crippled, our libraries closed. This is not the answer.

Shame on our elected officials for allowing the tax climate to reach such an ugly juncture. Many feel their choices are either Palesky or the status quo. Neither is acceptable. I fear what Maine will become if Palesky is passed, but I also fear what we are becoming if nothing is done. I will vote no on the tax cap and urge others to do the same. I don’t know what the solution is, but I know what it isn’t, and it isn’t Palesky.
