In an article from the Sun Journal, May 29, 2000, there was a bill signed into law by Gov. Angus King that contained the words: “No longer will Paris and other towns be able to honor their war dead at their larger cemeteries with just one big American flag at the entrance.” Small, individual flags, placed on each veteran’s gravesite, became the way to honor the veterans.

Some cemeteries place those flags for a brief time at Memorial Day and then remove them. Other cemeteries leave the flags in place for a few days longer. Wouldn’t it be marvelous to have those small flags in place to honor the war dead during the summer months and on other days that honor veterans?

Survivors visiting from other states while on vacation might pay respects in a visit to the cemeteries. And there are several days recognized as days to honor veterans during the year: May 8, VE Day; May 15, Armed Forces Day; Memorial Day; June 6, D-Day; June 14, Flag Day; July 4, Independence Day; Sept. 17, POW Day; and Nov. 11, Veterans Day.

It would be nice if the flags could be on display at those times.
