Jim Carignan gave advice to Sen. Kerry in a recent column (April 4). Here’s mine to the rest of us.

It will be difficult to run a good campaign against Sen. Kerry. He has only one issue: Get rid of Bush. On others, he claims both sides. The president must keep pointing this out, although the senator will call it impugning his patriotism.

The president must remind everyone often that 98 percent of the world’s terrorism is Islamic. On Sept. 11, it was 100 percent. Terrorists have no cause, only a goal: our submission. They don’t want our land or prosperity or apology for past wrongs. They want us kneeling in the sand with the Islamic boot on the American neck.

Elsewhere, the senator has the old solution: Throw money at it. Don’t expect new sources – he will rescind the tax cuts and increase taxes on the “rich.” Many reading this will be astonished to discover they’re rich.

In foreign affairs, expect the new solution: Let the U.N. do it. But the U.N. will continue to expect us to provide most of the money and cannon fodder. They’ll take the credit, if there is any, and blame us if there isn’t.

The senator will receive much support from folks who have run our state for decades. The new saying is: As Maine goes, so goes the nation … in the opposite direction as fast as it can. The new motto: Dirigo in Latrinam. Translation: I lead down the toilet.
