I am writing in response to a letter titled “No holiday” in which a couple announced they would not be celebrating Christmas this year because their only son has been deployed to Iraq (Dec. 23) .

I think this is sad. It’s sad because instead of feeling sorry for themselves or blaming the president for their son’s absence they should, in fact, be celebrating, celebrating the fact that their 19-year-old son has decided to join the military and defend/represent his own nation. He is, in fact, a brave man and a hero, in my eyes.

This brave son must have known when he signed up for the military that he might end up fulfilling these types of obligations. It is unfortunate that it had to happen during the holidays, but that was a decision he made, and because he made that decision, “I am proud to be an American, where at least I know I’m free, and I won’t forget the men who died and gave that right to me.”

Need I say more?

My husband and I have made it a point, and encourage everyone else to do the same, to approach all men and women in military uniform and thank them for our freedom.

So, to that mom and dad, be proud to be an American and know your son is in my heart, as well as millions of others.
