The article concerning the increasing popularity of the status symbol Hummer sport utility vehicle causes me great concern (Nov. 23).
I do not begrudge anyone the financial ability to afford to drive one of these behemoths. I do, however, wonder if America can afford to allow these gas-guzzling, ego-stroking status symbols.
A few short years ago, the SUV was a status symbol. Now that they have become too numerous to retain that title, the Hummer seems to be the vehicle of choice. When they also become too numerous to impress the neighbors, what will be next? Perhaps surplus Army tanks?
