In the April 27 Sun Journal, Peter Frewen mentioned the positive contributions of local arts groups to the area’s cultural life, specifically citing Bates College, L/A Arts, Public Theater and the Maine Music Society. All of these fine organizations contribute greatly to the Twin Cities.
There was one omission in the column.
Community Little Theatre has provided quality entertainment for 63 seasons. Perhaps the “community” in our name suggests that our shows are not top-quality, or perhaps the “little.” Whatever the case, our loyal audiences, comprising around 10,000 attendees each season, would argue the point.
For the bargain price of $12 per show (or less), one can experience “the finest community theater has to offer,” according to a Sun Journal critic. Without having to travel to Boston or Portland, without having to pay a first class price, our audiences receive first class entertainment.
Over the years, some of the area’s best musicians have graced our stage and orchestra pits. Some of our actors have performed on Broadway; others are headed that direction.
Our slogan is “where the stars start to shine,” and one only need attend one of our performances to see why. Whether musical, comedy or drama, CLT performances have been pleasing audiences for six decades.
Yes, we present “community” productions. We are community theatre because we are volunteers, not because our productions lack talent or quality.
We boast of being “The Biggest Little Theatre” in Maine. The entertainment we offer isn’t little at all.
