This letter is in regard to the attitudes of many citizens of the sex offender registry.
I think the list is there to empower community members and make them aware of the threats to their children. I am sick of hearing about how unfair it is to these predators.
Where is the justice for the victims?
Instead of worrying about protecting these criminals, our focus should be on protecting the innocent. Many people on the list complain about how “Their life is ruined,” or how it is such a crime was committed upon them.
Instead of focusing on them, we need to focus on the children whose lives will never be the same due to someone’s actions.
I think we, as community members, need to focus on the welfare of our children. I look at the registry on a weekly basis, not only to be informed for my children’s sake, but to see the faces that may cause harm to children in the community.
If there weren’t a list or notifications, a pedophile could possibly get a job at a child day care in the neighborhood. To me, that is far more unjust then the registry.
