This is in regard to the Leonard Pitts Jr. column, printed Sept 6. In it, Pitts ravages Katherine Harris. Pitts is incredulous that Harris would question the big lie of the separation of church and state. Recently on C-Span, Professor Gordon Wood of Brown University stated that the concept of separation of church and state by Thomas Jefferson was an anomaly, and not only was the concept an anomaly, but so was Jefferson (that is, Jefferson was not part of the consensus of the Founding Fathers).

Regarding Harris’ deplorable comments, I have read that the dominant influence in the Democratic Party is a thoroughly secular vision of American society. To me, secular means favoring the removal of all traditional values and beliefs from society.

That is what Pitts should be taking aim at, not at a woman who values this nation’s glorious Judeo/Christian heritage. Is he, in his columns, defaming our holy book and its divine commands?

Pitts does a great disservice to both American society and the Christian church as he demeans people such as Harris and many other very devout people.
