I read in recent days in the Sun Journal of the passing of my good friend, famous musician and band leader Maynard Ferguson. It brought wonderful memories of the days when I was the business agent for the Central Maine Musicians Association, Local 409, American Federations of Musicians of the United States and Canada. Our local office was located at 112 Lisbon St., Lewiston, over Edwards Men’s Shop.

I was a delegate to the 1974 annual convention of the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada, being held in Anaheim, Calif., in June of 1974.

During the week of the convention, after the daily order of business, during the day, most of us visited Disneyland and, for the week we were in Anaheim, we had the wonderful pleasure of listening to Maynard Ferguson and his super group of musicians.

On one occasion, I approached him and told him that I was from Maine and had a good friend of bandleader and musician Don Doane from Portland. Doane had played with his earlier bands. So, for the remainder of the week, we had reserved seats in front of the band.

Ferguson was a fantastic musician in every aspect of the word.
