The Canadian Hockey League consists of three leagues – the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, the Ontario Hockey League and the Western Hockey League – and 56 teams. The CHL’s 56 franchises are located in eight Canadian provinces and in four American states.

For the past 17 seasons, attendance records have been set in the CHL. In the 2001-2002 CHL season, more than 7 million fans attended regular season games, with another one million fans attending playoff games in the three leagues. In May of each year the playoff champions of each league and a host team compete for the Memorial Cup.

The Memorial Cup has been awarded annually since 1919 and is now presented to the champions of the Canadian Hockey League. The Kootenay Ice of the Western Hockey League captured the 2002 MasterCard Memorial Cup, hosted by the city of Guelph and the Guelph Storm of the OHL. The 2003 Memorial Cup will be hosted by the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, with the games taking place at the historic Colisee in beautiful Quebec City.

The CHL is the major source of talent for the National Hockey League. Well over 50 per cent of the players who played in the NHL in 2001-2002 were graduates of the CHL. Seventy per cent of the NHL’s coaches and general managers either played, coached or managed in the CHL prior to their NHL careers. In the 2001 NHL Entry Draft, 112 CHL players were selected, making the CHL by far the number one producer of talent for the NHL.
