AUBURN – Auburn Suburban Little League has won the state championship in the 9-10 Softball Division. The state tourney was held at Thomaston, July 17-22.
Suburban first had to win the District 5 championship. Auburn beat Lewiston 9-4 in the opener as Amanda Turcotte collected 2 hits. Allarie Lever and Ashlee Arnold both had a hit and an RBI. Winning pitcher Kristin Whittaker struck out 10, allowing just 1 hit, that to Paige Leblond. Auburn then won the District crown with a 14-4 triumph over Winslow. Emily Grund led the offense with 2 hits, 2 RBI and 4 runs scored. Hannah Carrier had a hit and scored a run, while Alexis Leclerc knocked in a run. Kayla Nadeau hurled 4 innings, yielding just 1 hit and fanning 7.
Suburban began the state tourney with an 11-1 win over South Portland as Whittaker hurled a no-hitter, striking out 12 for all the outs. Mariah Mosher reached base 3 times and stole 3 bases while scoring 3 runs. Kelsey Butcher collected an RBI on a bunt hit.
Auburn remained unbeaten with an 11-1 win over Biddeford. Turcotte, Whittaker and Grund combined for 5 hits. Nadeau earned the win, hurling a 1-hitter.
In the title tilt, Auburn held off a late Biddeford rally for a 7-5 victory. Crissy Lewis sparked the offense with a 2-2 game, with a walk and a run scored. Whittaker allowed just 3 hits while fanning 11. She also cracked 3 hits and drove in 3 runs.
