LEWISTON – Lacrosse, under the lights, second Friday night in May? Sounds like a good time for a warm cup of coffee. Lewiston’s boys are happy to serve the doughnuts.

Riddled by three first-period goals, the Blue Devils didn’t allow anything but the whispering breeze to tickle their net for the final 38 minutes, 54 seconds of a Twin Cities showdown at Bates College.

That defense transformed a high-octane, potentially high-stress contest into a 10-3 laugher at Edward Little’s expense.

“The wheels came off early. I think they figured us out pretty quickly,” said Edward Little coach Andy MacIsaac. “They played well. They controlled the ball well. They controlled the pace of the game they wanted. They kept us out of the goal. They did a lot of stuff right.”

Devin McLellan scored five of his team’s six first-half goals and ended with six for Lewiston (3-3). Jake Poisson also tallied twice at the end of lengthy, crisp possessions in the fourth quarter.

Kris Gagne and Jacob Tanguay led the aggressive defensive effort in front of Lewiston goaltender Elliot Chicoine, who made 12 saves.

“We have a pretty solid team. We don’t let them get in easy,” Chicoine said. “We kind of started off a little sloppy. We’re more of a second-half team, and today we played a whole game.”

Zach Bennett book-ended the first period with a pair of goals for the Eddies (2-4). Tom Lynch also connected, helping EL build leads of 2-0 and 3-2.

McLellan went the distance with the opening faceoff to christen the second period, walking in alone on EL goalie Derek Vachon for the equalizer.

“He won some key faceoffs (later) when we were only up by one or two and a needed a faceoff to keep the momentum,” Lewiston coach John Brubaker said of McLellan.

Seth Mason steered a scorching shot from the top of the circle to give Lewiston the lead for keeps with 9:08 remaining in the half. McLellan finished his own handiwork after a steal with 5:35 left, and his shot from beyond 20 yards with 2:11 remaining accounted for a 6-3 halftime lead.

Poisson and Alex Stone played keep-away to stymie most of an Eddies’ one-minute man advantage early in the third quarter.

“We tired them out a lot,” Chicoine said. “We were subbing and we didn’t let them get off the field, which helped us out.”

Craig Sirois registered the lone third-period goal for Lewiston.

“I think we mostly got outcoached today,” MacIsaac said. “We start Tuesday playing everybody again, so we hope to split with a few of them that we lost to the first time.”

Lewiston was pleased to back up its best performance of the season to date – a close loss at Messalonskee – with an authoritative triumph.

“We needed to play that way again with a little added intensity,” Brubaker said. “I think our strength is our athleticism. This is a team that needs a steady diet of the same thing. It’s a matter of doing what we do well.”
