LEWISTON – The first goal bounced off of two players on a shot from the corner.

The next hit a post, flew 50 feet into the air and landed at the feet of a forward, who banked the puck in off the goalie.

The third was a shot from the red line that went off a defenseman’s stick, and the fourth originated from behind the goal line.

Tough, grinding, gritty hockey produced odd goals all around and, on a rare occasion, the Lewiston Maineiacs earned the lion’s share of the good fortune.

Dominic Savoie netted three goals for his first QMJHL hat trick, Alex Beaton recorded four points and Adrien Lemay stopped 39 shots to lead the Maineiacs to a 5-3 victory over the visiting PEI Rocket at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.

“It was a scambly, scrappy game where both teams worked really hard,” Lewiston coach Don MacAdam said. “You would not use ‘pretty’ for the goals, but you’d certainly use ‘tremendous’ for the work level by both teams.”

Lemay has regularly seen about 40 shots per game since coming to Lewiston, and with very few exceptions, he’s done the job when MacAdam has called upon him.

“Fluke goals don’t bother Adrien Lemay,” MacAdam said. “He’s a strong player, and he really works hard on his preparation.”

Savoie scored his first on that wacky ricochet off the post, fired his second past PEI keeper Bobby Nadeau on a broken Alex Beaton dangle and didn’t even see his third go in as he was dumped in the slot as he chipped the puck high over the goalie.

The Rocket drew first blood just 5:50 into the game on the power play, when Joel Champagne’s pass from the right corner hit Lewiston defenseman Dany Coulombe, deflected off of Lemay and into the net.

“If our power play does the job in the first period, we very well could have blown it open,” PEI coach Guy Chouinard said. “We ha four power plays and we ended up with a lucky goal to get one.”

Savoie netted his first later in the frame, after a series of Lewiston penalties.

He launched a wrister that clanged off the left post at the junction of the crossbar over Nadeau’s left shoulder. The puck wobbled through the air and landed at Savoie’s feet. He turned a fired the puck back on net. It hit a very confused Nadeau and bounced in.

PEI got in on the crazy-goal action in the second, and it gave the Rocket a 2-1 lead through two.

This time, Jordan Southorn, who’d earlier fought with Lewiston defenseman Sam Finn, dumped the puck in and went to jump the boards for a change. His shot, deflected off a Lewiston defenseman’s stick, slowed down and floated past Lemay’s left shoulder and into the net.

“We got a few of the breaks tonight, and we worked hard enough to deserve the breaks,” MacAdam said.

Savoie added his next two in the third. Max Gratchev banked the puck in off Nadeau early in the frame to even things up. Savoie’s second gave the Maineiacs’ their first lead of the game, and after PEI’s Simon Olsson knotted things back up at 3-3, Savoie battled through three defenders to chip the puck over Nadeau on a scramble in front.

Beaton beat Nadeau with a 5-hole deke at 18:23 to put the game out of reach.

Lewiston will host Shawinigan on Sunday in a 4 p.m. matinee.
