PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Brittany Hilton, Monmouth
The Mustangs’ senior pitcher returned to action and returned to form after missing most of the season with a back injury. Hilton started Monmouth’s first game but had been out ever since. She returned to hurl the Mustangs to a pair of wins over playoff teams from Madison and Wiscasset. She returned with a 2-1 win over Madison and held the Bulldogs to just three hits. Two days later, she blanked Wiscasset, 9-0, and gave up just one hit.
QUICK HITS
MORE BANG FOR THE BUCKS
Buckfield may lose veteran pitcher Kasey Farrington to graduation, but the Bucks already have two young hurlers warming up for the future. Sophomore Brittany Wiley has seen action this season and even faced top-seeded Richmond. She pitched nicely, despite a 4-0 loss. Heather Clavet is a freshman that gives the Bucks plenty of pitching potential.
“(Wiley’s) actually going to be a great pitcher,” said Buckfield coach Ken Farrington. “I’ve got a freshman also. I’m fortunate to be where I am.”
LEFTY LABBE
When Lewiston’s Maria Labbe stepped into the lefthanded batter’s box against EL Tuesday, it was easy to assume it was no more than a ploy. Yet, the senior catcher jumped at the chance to line a sharp single to left and plate Sam Morency from third.
“There was a situation in a previous game with a runner on third,” said Lewiston coach Fred Royer. “I was going to do that, and I didn’t. If we get a ground ball to the right side, you can score a run, and she makes good contact.”
A MELTING POT
The Fryeburg Raiders have staked out the top spot in Western B and boast a 12-1 record. The team has pooled together a number of athletes from different sports to field a contender.
“The mixture of girls we have on this team is amazing,” said pitcher Hannah Hill. “It’s so cool. We have the real strong hockey athletes, the amazing basketball players and then we have girls like me that play softball. All together it’s incredible that we can pull together and make such a strong team.”
The team has created a buzz within its community, but a large part of that is also the Raiders’ willingness to work with the younger players in the area. Much of the Fryeburg team is active in clinics and supporting the youth levels.
“We have a team full of that,” said Coach Fred Apt. “If we have a little kid’s youth game, we’re all there. It’s really cool. We have a great team.”
YOUNG SAINTS
St. Dom’s may already be a team to watch in Western C, but the Saints’ promise may last longer than just this spring. St. Dom’s, which was ranked sixth in Western C this week, has just two seniors in the starting lineup. After losing a handful of key starters from last year’s club, the Saints will only graduate outfielder Danielle Guerin and third baseman Alex Hewitt.
“Except for (Hewitt), my whole infield is coming back,” said Saints coach Brian Kay. “My second baseman (Alex Landry) is a sophomore and (Erynne Landry) at first is a junior. My catcher (Kelsey Murphy) is a junior. The outfield is two sophomores (Lindsey Nance and Heidi Nadeau) and (Guerin).”
