One impressive boys’ track and field streak is expected to continue this week, while a newer program recently launched one of its own.

Edward Little will travel to Bath for a competition with Morse and several other Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference rivals riding a streak of 99 consecutive outdoor victories and heavily favored to hit the century mark.

That total does not represent the number meets, but rather the list of teams the Red Eddies have defeated during that span. Winning a quadrangular meet would count as three wins, in other words.

Poland ended a much more frustrating streak and started a more favorable one by tying Falmouth at home and then winning a meet at Traip Academy. Since winning the Western Maine Conference championship in the first year of its school’s existence a decade ago, Poland had not won an outdoor boys’ meet.

Winning regular-season meets is usually an indication of strength in numbers and the ability to fill events en masse. More than 100 boys and girls signed up for the Poland track team this spring, up from 25 to 30 three years ago.

Whyte-out

Lewiston and Edward Little demonstrated their depth in last Saturday’s David Whyte Memorial Relays, each winning five events in the competition at Waterville High School.

Lea Morin and Erin Glann each played a role in three victorious relay teams for the Blue Devils.

They combined with Nyorko Bonsu and Kelsey Cope-Norris to lead the girls’ 800-meter sprint relay. Seeded eight seconds behind the host Purple Panthers, Lewiston improved to a time of 2:00.12 and beat Waterville by nearly a full second.

Bonsu and Shelby Dobransky joined forces with Glann and Morin to capture the 4×200. Ruth Choate and Sarah Manyell rounded out the winning combination in the 4×400.

The Devils’ distance medley boys’ team of Jeff Lucier, Tom Tripp, Abdullahi Musse and Matt Driscoll notched a victory, as did triple jump standout Hossain Naji.

Not to be outdone, EL flaunted its strength in the field events. Ben Hartnett and Garrett Wyman went one-two in the long jump. Josh Clark prevailed in pole vault, while Abby Downs dominated the girls’ high jump.

Two relay teams also shone for the Eddies. Ethan Grund, Tyler Gammon, Chris Caiani and Jeremy Theriault ruled the boys’ 4×800. Jaime Russell, Muriel Schwinn, Hanna Mogensen and Danielle Paul paced the girls’ distance medley.
