BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Massachusetts Maritime took both ends of a baseball twinbill over the University of Maine at Farmington (0-2) on Friday. The Bucaneers claimed the opener 9-4, and then completed the sweep with a 7-3 victory in Game 2.

Senior right hander Billy Martinpicked up his second win of the season in the opener in a complete game seven inning performance. He allowed four runs, only two of which were earned, on six hits, while striking out eight. Junior Dan Hemdal was tagged with the loss.

Jared Wales of New Gloucester got the start for UMF and went four frames before giving way to Will Griffiths (Mechanic Falls) who pitched the fifth. Matt Levine pitched the sixth for the Beavers. Wales (0-1) was tagged with the loss.

Bates drops two

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rhode Island College swept a doubleheader against Bates College with 8-0 and 10-3 lopsided victories to improve to 8-4 on a cold and windy afternoon at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Friday.

The Bobcats remain winless with a 0-6 mark. RIC senior Christie Lotti was a one-woman wrecking crew, going 5-for-9 with four runs scored, three RBIs, four stolen bases and a double in the wins.

Game 2 started out as a closely contested game, with the Bobcats taking an early 1-0 lead on junior first baseman Val Beckwith’s RBI single off of Neece in the third inning.

Bates wasted little time in tying the game at 2-2, as junior third baseman Stacia Saniuk led off with an opposite-field homer to right field to start the fourth.

The Anchorwomen took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth on a sophomore shortstop Kelsey Souza two-RBI single to left field.
