Norm Gagne knew Jon Roy was the ultimate competitor on the ice, but it wasn’t until he took his Lewiston hockey captain out for a round of golf that he experienced on a personal level just how good Roy was at winning a one-on-one battle.
“He came up one summer and I said, ‘Hey, let’s go out and play some golf,’ and he beat my butt all over the place,” Gagne said with a laugh. “And you know, that’s not his best sport,” Gagne said.
“You don’t see many kids like him that know how to compete. He knows how to compete.”
Roy was one of four seniors announced as a finalist Monday for the Travis Roy Award by the Maine Class A High School Hockey Coaches Association.
Falmouth goaltender Derek Kump, Biddeford netminder Tony Dube and Messalonskee center Matt Delguidice are the other three finalists. The winner will be announced at the Class A Hockey State Banquet at noon this Sunday, March 16, at the Ramada Inn in Lewiston.
Roy lettered for four years for the Blue Devils and led them to four straight Eastern Maine titles, the last two as captain. This season he finished second in in Eastern Maine scoring with 50 points (26 goals, 24 assists).
“I’ve watched him grow for three years, and I’ve got to tell you, this kid, and I’ve been doing this for a long time, he’s a competitor,” Gagne said. “Coaches always talk about winning the one-on-one battles. If Jon goes into the corner with somebody, he’s going to come out with the puck. He’s just a hard-nosed competitor.”
“Getting the puck out, playing the penalty kill, power play, I mean, I can trust him to do what I need to be done. And he’ll do it to a ‘T,'” he added.
Roy was at his best in the Eastern Maine championship game, scoring four goals in last year’s win over Bangor and then a hat trick in last week’s victory over Waterville.
“You need a big play in a big game, he’s going to be there to make it for you,” Gagne said.
Roy also captains the Lewiston soccer and lacrosse squads and is a volunteer with local youth baseball and with the Special Olympics. An honor student, he plans on attending a yet to be determined college in the fall.
Kump, a four-year starter, posted a 1.45 GAA and .929 save percentage for the Yachtsmen. He led the state with nine league shutouts, one of several school records he now owns along with career wins (48) and career shutouts (17). He is a member of the National Honor Society and has received multiple scholastic awards at Falmouth, including the Bowdoin Book Award for Character and Leadership in the Classrooom and the MIT Promise of the Future Award for Science and Technology Achievement. He volunteers as a coach with the Falmouth Middle School team, holds a 98 percent GPA and plans on playing junior hockey next season.
Dube posted a state-leading 1.00 GAA and .957 save percentage while leading Biddeford to its second consecutive Class A state title this season. His 46-9 career mark is a school record and ended his career with a 1.45 GAA. He is an honor roll student who regularly volunteers with Biddeford Youth Hockey and assists with a local soup kitchen one evening a week during the off-season. He is undecided on his college plans for next year.
Delguidice scored 28 goals and tallied 37 assists to lead Eastern Maine in scoring this year. He racked up 57 goals and 107 assists for 164 points during his four-year career, good for third all-time in school history. He is also a four-year letterman and two-year captain of the Eagles’ soccer and lacrosse teams. Delguidice volunteers with both Waterville Youth Hockey and Oakland youth soccer and is a youth soccer and hockey referee. He holds an 85.3 GPA and will attend Bridgton Academy in the fall, where he will continue to play both hockey and lacrosse in hopes of playing in college.
The Class A Senior All-Star Game rosters were also announced. The West squad includes Andrew Gwarjanski and Jeff Lewandowski of St. Dom’s. The East team includes Matt Nyholm of Edward Little, Cory Cormier of GNG/Poland, and Jon Roy, Jordan Bourgoin, Casey Poussard, Matt Letourneau and Justin Nadeau of Lewiston.
“Three of those young men were captains for us – Bourgoin, J.R. and Matty Letourneau,” Gagne said, “and we made it all the way to the state championship last year coming from 3-8, and they carried it through this year.”
The game will be played at 7:20 p.m. on Saturday, March 15 at the Family Ice Center in Falmouth.
