They’ve reached the ultimate team goal. Now Winthrop’s Sam Leclerc and Maranacook’s Ryan Martin are on the verge of the ultimate individual honor in Maine high school basketball.
Leclerc and Martin are two of the three finalists for Mr. Maine Basketball, which were announced Thursday by the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches and local Maine McDonald’s owners and operators.
Leclerc, who scored 28 points to lead Winthrop to its first Class C championship in 15 years on Wednesday, and Martin, who tallied 26 points to lead Maranacook to its second Class B title in three years last Friday night, are joined by Bangor’s Jon McAllian for the Mr. Basketball award, given annually to the state’s top senior high school basketball player.
T.J. Cauoette won the award in 1996 and is the only Winthrop player to be named Mr. Basketball. No one from Maranacook has ever won the award. Edward Little’s Troy Barnies earned it last year.
Jill Henrikson of Morse, Rachel Mack of Cony, and Aarika Ritchie of Lee Academy are the finalists for Miss Basketball.
The winners will be announced at the Maine McDonald’s All-Star Banquet on Friday, March 14 at Husson College’s Newman Gymnasium. The Maine McDonald’s All-Star Basketball Games will be played the following day, beginning at 8:30 a.m. with the state free throw championship. Tickets to the game can be purchased at the door and are good for all four games. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students, children and senior citizens. Net proceeds benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Maine.
