The Sun Journal’s sports department received some good news from the Associated Press Sports Editors this week.

In judging that finished Wednesday, the Sun Journal was rated in the Top 10 among papers its size across the country for both the daily section and for the Sunday section.

The Sun Journal submitted sections for consideration, and was also subject to mandatory date submissions in each category. The Sun Journal’s size category is the Under-40,000 circulation category, and includes papers such as the Lawrence (Kansas) Journal World, the Tuscaloosa (Alabama) News, the Glens Falls (New York) Post-Star and the New Bedford (Mass.) Standard Times.

In addition to the section awards, writer Kalle Oakes was honored twice, earning Top-10 honors for column writing and explanatory story for his work in the debate between metal and wooden baseball bats.

Awards will be presented at the APSE’s annual convention, being held this year in Minneapolis in June.
