Boys: Ernie Matthews, Mountain Valley wrestling
The 130-pound junior punctuated an exceptional run through the holiday festival season with a third-place finish at the Sanford Redskin Tournament. Twenty-one teams from throughout New England competed in the annual showcase. Matthews muscled out a 5-4 overtime verdict over Brandon Page of Concord, N.H., in the consolation final. That performance piggybacked a December in which Matthews won the McDonald’s Tournament, Atlantic Invitational and Westbrook Invitational titles and took the bronze at the the Noble Invitational.
Girls: Kyle Cyr, Mt. Blue alpine skiing
Last year’s third-place finisher in both slalom and giant slalom at the Class A state meet, Cyr swept the first two events of her senior season in a span of less than 24 hours over the weekend. Cyr posted the two fastest runs in a Friday slalom at Titcomb Mountain, clocking a combined time that was more than a full second quicker than runner-up Kerry Gross of Camden Hills. The next afternoon at Black Mountain, Cyr topped closest pursuers Kera Miller and Shelby Moore of Mountain Valley by better than two seconds on their home hill.
