Justin Fereshetian looked right at home in Saturday’s Hornet Classic. Leavitt’s leading male Nordic skier finished four seconds ahead of Mt. Blue’s Welly Ramsey to win a race that featured more than 17 full squads and over 100 skiers.
Mt. Blue used a ninth-place finish by Adam Fissette and strong results from Derek Rowe and Brody Hines to top Leavitt, 45-69, in the boys’ team competition.
Peter Cowan of Gould Academy claimed third in the event. Other area top-10 performers were Lauren Turner of Leavitt, fourth; Spencer Esuden of Oxford Hills, fifth; Chris Mawhinney of Edward Little, eighth; and Justin Carpenter of Winthrop, 10th.
Fun for the whole family
Heavy, early-season snow offered Rangeley an opportunity to host its traditional season-opening giant slalom at Saddleback on Dec. 21, and it gave Mt. Abram High School sisters Erica and Emily Luce a head start in their friendly battle for family honor on the hill this winter.
Score the first round for Erica, a senior, whose second-run time of 40.23 enabled her to edge sophomore sis Emily by three-tenths of a second. The result reinforced Erica’s status as one of the favorites for Class B skimeister honors at this year’s state meet.
Bob Luce, the girls’ father, is in his third year as the Roadrunners’ head coach.
Luke Hammond of Rangeley captured the boys’ race.
Name’s the same
Another year, another Brodsky piling up the points for the Edward Little High School boys’ swim team.
While the Red Eddies miss former standout Andrew Brodsky, now competing at Hamilton (N.Y.) College, his freshman brother, Tim, is busy crafting an impressive opening act to his career in the pool. Tim captured the 200-yard individual medley and an exhibition 100 backstroke win against St. Dom’s on Dec. 23.
Last Friday, the younger Brodsky shared a 200 medley relay win with Stephen McDonough, Michael Pietersen and Nathan Goss for the Eddies against Skowhegan. With the Indians unable to field a full team in most events, Brodsky also posted the fastest time in three exhibition races: 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly and 400 freestyle relay.
