BREWER – Senior guard Mukhtar Sharif recorded 20 points to lead Edward Little to a 67-50 victory over Brewer in KVAC boys’ basketball action Saturday.

The Witches (1-4) played with intensity in the first quarter, taking an 18-15 first-quarter lead. But the Red Eddies (3-2) applied pressure over the ensuing three quarters to retake and keep the lead.

Junior forward Corey Therriault notched a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, including the team’s only 3-pointer, and five steals. Senior Kyle Philbrook scored 11 pionts, seven assists and six steals, while senior guard Ben Hartnett contributed 13 points in the winning effort.

Greenville 50, Buckfield 45

BUCKFIELD – Keith Aucoin scored 14 points and Richie Chilson came up with another 13 as Greenville shook off Buckfield with a 50-45 victory in a boys’ basketball game Saturday.

By halftime, Greenville (1-2) orchestrated a 23-15 lead.

For the Bucks (1-3), Zach Cowett turned in a stunning performance on offense, dropping in the game-high 22 points, including two 3-pointers. Teammate Cy Wilkinson scored 14.

Dirigo 80, Lisbon 30

LISBON – Junior center Thomas Knight tossed a game-high 16 points as Dirigo steamed to an 80-30 victory over Lisbon in MVC boys’s basketball action Saturday.

The Greyhounds (0-5) fought back from an 11-0 start to close the first quarter with a five-point deficit. Senior guard Zach Moan led Lisbon with five field goals, including one from the 3-point variety.

Senior forward Colby Knapp contributed to the balanced attack of the Cougars (5-0) with 13 points on five field goals and three free throws.

Hockey

Leavitt 3, Marshwood-Traip 0

DOVER, N.H. – Junior forward Steven Rouillard netted a pair of first period goals to lift Leavitt to a 3-0 win over Marshwood-Traip in ice hockey action Saturday.

The Hornets (3-1) received an insurance goal late in the game from junior forward Tyler Robitaille, who also assisted on one of Rouillard’s two goals.

Goalie Mark Haley made 30 saves for Marshwood-Traip, while Richard Thibeault turned back 18 for Leavitt to notch the win.

Mt. Ararat 3, Messalonskee 2

AUBURN – Anthony Cuppernell found the back of the net to tie the game late in the third period and again during the shootout to nail down a 3-2 win for Mt. Ararat over Messalonskee in the Gipper’s Tournament at Ingersoll Arena on Saturday.

Brett Glasheen and Nick Deblois each scored a goal and an assist for Messalonskee.

Lewiston 11, EL 1

AUBURN – Casey Poussard scored a hat trick in the first period as Lewiston crushed Edward Little 11-1 in the Gipper’s Tournament at Ingersoll Arena on Saturday.

The Blue Devils scored six unanswered goals in the first period. Ben McDonough contributed a pair of tallies for Lewiston.

Senior defenseman Kyle Ouellette scored the only Red Eddie goal of the contest in the second period.

Alex Lafreniere made 10 saves for Lewiston, while Adam Loudermilk fended off 33 shots, and Rich Belanger finished off the game with five saves for Edward Little.

Poland-GNG 4, South Portland 1

PORTLAND – Senior center Cory Cormier scored a pair of goals and an assist as Poland-Gray-New Gloucester skated to a 4-1 triumph over South Portland at the Portland Arena Saturday evening.

The Patriotic-Knights (3-2) dominated, taking a 3-0 lead after two periods. Senior center Zach Arnold collected a goal and an assist in the winning effort.

Zach Griffin converted a relay from Nick Griffin for the Red Riots (2-2) early in the third period, cutting the margin to two briefly before the final buzzer.

Girls’ basketball

Winslow 47, Oak Hill 36

WALES – Lindsay Gordon deposited the game-high 18 points as Winslow dispatched Oak Hill with a 47-36 victory in a girls’ basketball game Saturday.

Winslow had built a 25-20 lead at halftime, and then erupted with 16 more points in the final stanza.

For the Raiders (1-4), Emily Sabine scored 11 points, and teammate Carrie Hayden helped out with 10 and eight rebounds.

Jay 47, Carrabec 39

JAY – Sophomore forward Hillary Deane tickled the twines with 25 points to lead Jay to a 47-39 victory over Carrabec in MVC girls’ basketball action Saturday.

The Tigers (3-1) jumped out to an 11-5 first-quarter lead, and played consistent over the next three frames. Deane notched nine of her 25 points in the first quarter.

Junior guard Erica French was the leading scorer for the Cobras (1-3) with 11 points,

Men’s basketball

Connecticut 105, Maine 60

HARTFORD, Conn. – Stanley Robinson scored 32 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and blocked three shots as he led Connecticut to an easy 105-60 victory over Maine on Saturday.

The first meeting in 15 years between the former Yankee Conference foes turned out to be no contest as Connecticut took control of the game midway through the first half.

The Huskies (8-2) had a 53-28 lead at halftime and coasted to their third straight win and fifth in six games. Maine, suffering its third straight loss, drops to 4-7.

Robinson, a sophomore from Birmingham, Ala., scored his career-high on a variety of alley-oop dunks, mid-range jump shots, high-flying putbacks and three-point shots.

Jeff Adrien added 19 points and 13 rebounds for UConn, his fifth double-double of the season, while Hasheem Thabeet added 16 points and 10 rebounds, and A.J. Price had 17 points and nine assists.

Junior Bernal had 16 points to lead Maine.

Robinson, charged with a technical foul with 11:09 remaining in the first half and Connecticut leading by 18-13, took over the rest of the first half.

The sophomore scored Connecticut’s next three baskets, two of them on alley-oop dunks, as he led the Huskies on one run of 13-3 and another of 22-9 to send UConn into halftime with the commanding lead.

The Huskies began the second half with nine unanswered points against the overmatched Black Bears and continued the onslaught, widening the gap to 66-33, 80-43, and the 45-point final margin.

It was Connecticut’s first 100-point game since Dec. 3, 2006, a 106-55 win over Texas Southern.
