SAINT JOHN, NEW BRUNSWICK – Marc Bourgeois scored in the 12th round of the shootout to lift the Lewiston Maineiacs to a 2-1 victory over Saint John Tuesday night.
The shootout was the longest in Maineiacs history, and head coach Ed Harding said the team was fortunate to come back home with the win.
“We’ll take the two points and sneak out the back door,” said Maineiacs head coach Ed Harding. “We weren’t very sharp overall. We’re actually very lucky to win this hockey game. It’s a mental thing. We’ve got guys that aren’t following directions, and that made this game more difficult for them. We need an attitude adjustment.”
Lewiston was 1-for-13 on the power play, but Jonathan Bernier was still able to pick up his first win of the season by turning aside aside 26 Sea Dogs shots, including a penalty shot by Ryan Sparling at 15:34 of the first period.
“There was good goaltending on both sides,” Harding said. “Jonathan was very good. He was superb and showed a lot of leadership.”
Saint John took a 1-0 lead on a Sparling power-play goal at 15:38 of the second period. Denis Reul tied the game with his second goal of the year, also on the power play, at 15:17 of the third.
The shootout started with Bernier and Sea Dogs goalie Travis Fullerton, a former Maineiac, combining to stop the first seven shooters on each side. Lewiston’s Marc-Andre Daneau finally broke through in the eighth round, but Keven Guerette-Charland beat Bernier to keep Saint John alive. Lucas LaBelle found the back of the net on Lewiston’s next attempt, then Francois Gauthier answered for Saint John. Two more rounds passed with Bernier and Fullerton stops before Bourgeois beat Fullerton and Bernier denied Michael Kirkpatrick to end the shootout.
Fullerton tallied 24 saves for the Sea Dogs.
The Maineiacs return home for two-game set with Prince Edward Island on Friday and Saturday nights.
