SKOWHEGAN – Having to travel to Skowhegan on a Friday night in October is a daunting enough task without the added perks of it being Senior Night, and the Indians breathing fire because they were coming off their first loss of the season.

Those unfortunate circumstances converged on Oxford Hills Friday night as Skowhegan rolled to a 62-15 victory at Clark Field.

Billy Clark caught two touchdown passes and ran for two more scores in the first half as the Indians bounced back from last week’s loss to Bangor. They improved to 4-1 heading into next week’s showdown with unbeaten Lawrence.

Clark ran for touchdowns of 25 and 16 yards in the first quarter, then caught passes of 26 and 29 yards from QB Eric Thisell in the second quarter as Skowhegan roared out to a 40-0 halftime lead.

“We had to come out strong coming off a tough loss,” Clark said. “We had to surprise them (with the passing game) and they weren’t ready for it. Eric threw some nice balls and I just had to catch them.”

Skowhegan’s double-wing rolled up 524 yards of total offense, 469 of those coming on the ground.

Zack Whiting led the charge with 142 yards on 13 carries, including an 82-yard TD run in the second half.

“They just push you all over the field,” Oxford Hills coach Bob Austin said. “They run that offense the way it’s designed to be run. They’re very, very tough defensively. They fly to the ball and they whack people.”

Skowhegan focused its efforts defensively on shutting down D.J. Drew, one of the top rushers in the PTC.

The junior tailback didn’t enjoy much blocking in front of him and was limited to just one yard on nine carries in the first half. He finished with 13 yards on 12 rushes for the night.

Oxford Hills had more success throwing the ball. Justin Frechette finished 9-for-22 for 91 yards with one interception.

“We threw the ball better this week, and hopefully we’ll be able to mix it up a little bit more, run and pass, and get the offense back on track,” said Austin, whose team faces Lewiston next week. “Justin’s more comfortable in the shotgun, so we’ll put some more things in with that.”

The Vikings weren’t able to cash in on a couple of forays deep into Skowhegan territory in the first half but finally got on the board on a 16-yard TD run by backup QB Jake Hall in the third quarter and a 1-yard TD plunge by Caleb Flanders in the fourth quarter. Dustin Corson added touchdown runs of 50 and 47 yards for Skowhegan in the second half.
