Former Maine Amateur champion Ricky Jones’ run through the United State Amateur Championship golf tournament came to an end Thursday, one day after he pulled off one of the bigger upsets of the week.

Jones, who started Thursday with a 3-up lead through three holes, struggled on the middle part of the par-70 Lake Course at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. George Zahringer took advantage of Jones’ misfortunes, closing with two birdies on the final five holes to upend Jones 2-up in the round of 32.

Jones started the week with two rounds of stroke play. He finished tied for 14th overall after those two rounds at 2-over-par 142.

In his first round of match play, Jones ended up paired with U.S. Walker Cup Team member Dustin Johnson, who was exempt from qualifying for the tournament.

After trailing for most of the front nine against Johnson, Jones turned it around with a par-birdie-par stretch at the 8th, 9th and 10th holes to go 2-up. He was still 2-up through 14, suffered a bogey on the 15th, but hung on to defeat Johnson 1-up.

Thursday was different. Jones went ahead by three in his first three holes with two pars and a birdie. But slowly his lead slipped. Zahringer battled back to all square through 11 holes, took his first lead on the 13th, and took the lead for good with a par on the par-3 15th hole.

Jones parred the 18th, but Zahringer birdied to cap the 2-up victory.
