Home Run Derby
1 p.m. and 7 p.m., ESPN
How bad is the deadest day of the year in national sports? We get a chance to watch the lamest derby to date, again. And again.
Rising Sun
1:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., NESN
A review of Daisuke Matsuzaka’s first half-season in the big leagues. Thirty minutes of gopher balls and riveting sound bites from Jason Varitek. Yee-ha.
Classic Baseball: Boston vs. Minnesota, Sept. 30, 1967
7 p.m., NESN
Credit where credit is due: This beats the heck out of the standard Manny, Papi or Varitek walk-off against Seattle in 2004.
Baseball: AAA All-Star Game
7:30 p.m., ESPN2
Best part of this event isn’t the what, or the who, but the where: Isotopes Park in Albuquerque, N.M. If the field were in New Jersey, you could assume it was literally built over a toxic waste dump.
Brooklyn Dodgers: The Ghosts of Flatbush
8 p.m., HBO
They double my cable bill, but they’re still the only place to see championship boxing and legitimate sports documentaries.
NBA Summer League: Celtics vs. China
10 p.m., FSNE
No, seriously, that’s the match-up. Yao Ming could beat the Celtics’ rookies and free agents by himself.
The Bronx is Burning
10 p.m., ESPN
I’d love to rip this latest attempt at “original programming” by a network that should stick to highlights, but the Bear Bryant and Dale Earnhardt movies weren’t half bad.
