AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – The Maine Department of Environmental Protection is considering the use of herbicide to control the spread of Eurasian milfoil in a cove on Salmon Lake in Belgrade.
A public hearing is scheduled Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Union Church in Belgrade Lakes.
The DEP plans to conduct a discussion of eradication efforts over the past year and reasons for taking a next step.
Eurasian milfoil in Salmon Lake was first reported to DEP last August. Since then, divers have worked to remove plants.
Officials say that Eurasian Milfoil, if left unchecked, can displace native plants and alter the lake’s habitat.
The DEP says the only other known Eurasian water milfoil infestation in Maine is in a small private pond in Scarborough.
