Winslow coach Mike Siviski says he doesn’t know what the deciding factor to Saturday night’s Class B state championship game with unbeaten Mountain Valley, but he knows what he doesn’t want it to be..
“The last time we played them,” Siviski said, “we fumbled the opening kickoff and then they got a defensive touchdown in the first quarter.”
The last time was the 2004 state championship, which Mountain Valley won, 21-7, to garner its first title. Five turnovers against an aggressive Falcon defense spelled doom for the Black Raiders.
Four starters remain from that Class B runner-up, including quarterback Stephen Siviski and shifty triple threat Justin Lindie, who were super sophomores then and are incomparable seniors now.
Stephen Siviski is in his third year running his father’s option offense, so it shouldn’t be surprising that his decision-making was unparalleled in the PTC this year. He topped the 1,000-yard passing mark in last week’s PTC championship against Gardiner and has thrown 16 touchdowns and just one interception while completing well over 60 percent of his passes.
His pitch-man on the option is Lindie, probably the fastest tailback in the state. The three-year starter has tallied over 2,000 all-purpose yards (including 1,500 rushing) and 23 touchdowns running, receiving and returning kicks.
“When you look at Justin, you have to look at his all-purpose yards and his big-play ability. He’s a pretty good football player,” coach Siviski said in the understatement of the year.
Fullback John Goulette’s tough inside running keeps defenses from keying too much on Lindie, while wingback James Wood and tight end Kevin McCabe are reliable options in the passing game.
McCabe also mans the middle of the defense, which also includes fellow linebacker Siviski and a veteran secondary led by Jon Hachey and Brendan Weed. The unit has been peaking at the right time, surrendering just 16 points in the playoffs.
“Our defense has improved in the last few weeks. We’re not at a size advantage, certainly, but we have a couple of big kids,” said Siviski, who led Winslow to back-to-back titles in 2000-2001. “McCabe has done a very, very good job. He’s an imposing figure. He runs well and he’s a good hitter.”
The lone four-year starter on the Raider roster is kicker Ben Poulin, who missed just two of 47 PATs this year and has split the uprights on three field goals.
