If you went to a high school football game last week and blinked, chances are you missed a touchdown.
Fifteen teams exploded for 35 or more points in Week 3. Four teams – Belfast, Lewiston, Waterville and Winslow, topped the 50-point plateau. Winslow led the fireworks with 70 points against Old Town.
Some of those teams might wish they could have carried over a couple of touchdowns to Week 4. Lewiston will find the points harder to come by when it travels to Fairfield tonight for an interesting matchup sending the best running back in the state, Jared Turcotte, against what many consider the best defense in the Pine Tree Conference.
The slate in Class B and Class C features several contests pitting teams with 1-2 records that may need a win to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Here’s a closer look at this weekend’s schedule:
Lewiston (2-1) at Lawrence (3-0), 7 p.m.
Lawrence’s vaunted defense faces its toughest test so far this season, encountering a dynamic Lewiston offense that rolled up 54 points last week against Skowhegan. Running backs Turcotte and Wesley Myers accounted for 256 of the Blue Devils’ 272 yards rushing and seven of their eight touchdowns. Turcotte scored two TDs for Lewiston’s defense, which, if it can win the battle for field position tonight, can give the Blue Devils a big edge.
The Bulldogs ‘D’ has yet to give up a point this season (Oxford Hills scored seven last week on a fumble return). Linemen Wayne Morrill, Bryan Slaney and Isaiah Underwood front a unit that has yielded less than 90 yards per game. The offense, meanwhile, seems to be feeding off the defense’s dominance, as running backs Aaron Champagne and David Wallace spearheaded 279 yards in rushing offense against the Vikings.
Edward Little (2-1) at Skowhegan (1-2), 7 p.m.
Coming off a thrilling overtime win over Messalonskee, the Red Eddies would like to get some momentum going into the second half of the season. The offense revolves around quarterback Troy Barnies, running backs Jon Demers and Chris Ringer and a solid offensive line. The defense buckled down in the second half against Messalonskee’s double wing and hopes to put two good halves together against Skowhegan’s double wing.
The young Indians have struggled to find consistency, but the Eddies still need to be aware that Skowhegan is always a tough place to play, and the Indians have historically shown a penchant for improving rapidly through the course of the season.
Livermore Falls (1-2) at Winthrop (1-2), 7 p.m.
The Battle of Route 133 pits two teams who got in the win column last week. Livermore Falls pulled off a shocking 28-14 victory over Boothbay, while Winthrop dominated Traip, 43-6.
The mission for the Ramblers will be stopping Mark O’Shea while he runs behind one of the best offensive lines in Western C. Winthrop presents the Andies with the challenge of slowing down a balanced offense. Jake Steele wracked up 240 yards rushing and caught one of Kyle Plossay’s four TD passes in the Rambler rout.
Oak Hill (1-2) at Morse (1-2). 7 p.m.
Two teams hoping to emerge from a jumbled middle-of-the-pack in Eastern Class B square off in Bath. The Raiders look to bounce back after giving up 52 points last week at Belfast. Morse showed a balanced offense in last week’s comeback win over Leavitt, with Darrus Grate, the PTC’s leading rusher, collecting 203 yards and three touchdowns on the ground and QB Jamie Dunning firing the game-winning TD pass in the final moments.
Both teams have struggled defending the run, which could mean big nights for Grate and his Oak Hill counterpart, Adam Tremblay, who is averaging more than eight yards per carry.
