LEWISTON – Former Winthrop football head coach and Lewiston assistant Chris Kempton was named an assistant football coach at Bates College.

Kempton, who most recently worked as an assistant coach at Colby, will serve as defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator.

He is one of three new coaches joining Mark Harriman’s staff. Matt Dence, who has coached at Yale, Amherst, Springfield and King’s, will be the Bobcats’ offensive coordinator. He will also coach the quarterbacks and serve as the team’s strength coach. Recent Colgate graduate Josh Hedrick, who played tight end, will coach the wide receivers.

The other coaches on Harriman’s staff include Craig Vandersea (running backs), C.J. DeMatteo (offensive line), Skip Capone (defensive line) and Joe DeMatteo (outside linebackers).

Bates opens the season Sept. 23 at Amherst.
