WATERVILLE – The 10th-ranked Bates College men’s lacrosse team got down early but rallied back in the second half to slip away with a 9-7 victory over Colby on Wednesday.
The Mules (2-5) opened up a 4-0 lead just 12 minutes into the contest, with Ryan Scott posting two goals. Bates received two goals in the final 2:10 of the first quarter to cut the lead in half.
The Bobcats (9-0) scored the first three goals of the second quarter to take a 5-4 lead. Colby knotted the game at 5-5 just before halftime when Rory Murphy tallied with 2:58 remaining in the half. Matt Erisman, who led the Bobcats with four goals and two assists, had a big second half. He scored three goals and added an assist, plus scored the only two goals of the third quarter to put Bates up for good.
The Mules cut the lead to one goal on two occasions in the fourth quarter, only to see Bates score to extend the lead back to two. Justin Simon had a pair of goals for Bates, while Amadi Cisse and Ithai Schori had one goal and one assist. Murphy finished with three goals and one assist for Colby, while Scott had three goals. Paul Kazarian stopped six shots in net for Bates, while Jeff Miller turned aside 13 shots for Colby.
Mt. Ida 13, Maine Maritime 9
CASTINE – Brett Conley scored five goals and added three assists to lead Mt. Ida to a 13-9 victory over Maine Maritime in men’s lacrosse action Wednesday.
Matt Ramieor and Alex Champagne tallied two goals apiece for the Mustangs (7-2), while single tallies by Chris Prophete, Andrew Lampert, Jonathan Lightbrown and Vince Pizzimenti completed the scoring. Bryan Smith made 13 saves to record the win.
The Mariners (2-1) were paced by Luke McPartlin, Brandon Hamilton and John O’Malley with two goals each, while Nate Bolduc, Will Hood and Garrett Lake also tallied to round out the scoring.
Women’s lacrosse
UNE 18, Nichols 7
BIDDEFORD – Ashley Pellerin scored five goals to lead the University of New England to a 18-7 victory over Nichols College in women’s lacrosse action Wednesday.
The Nor’easters (6-4) had trouble getting their offense cranked up early, scoring just a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes. Leading 4-3 with just under 12 minutes remaining in the first half, UNE reeled off four unanswered goals to take control and head into halftime with an 8-3 advantage.
Sam Robinson supported the offensive attack with four goals.
Colby 21, Bates 10
LEWISTON – Becky Julian and Kate Sheridan tallied four goals each to lead Colby to a 21-10 victory over Bates in women’s lacrosse action Wednesday.
Elizabeth Ghilardi added three goals and an assist, while sophomore Lauren Barrett also scored a hat trick. Carrie Lovejoy scored twice with one assist, while Abby Libby added a goal and two assists. The Mules’ (6-1) junior goalkeeper Catherine O’Brien made 22 saves in net to notch the win.
The Bobcats (4-3) were paced by Molly Wagner with three goals, while Katherine Farmer added two goals and an assist. Caroline Thomas registered a goal and two assists, while single tallies by Meg Coffin, Sarah Peters, Julie Berman and Shannon Tully completed the scoring.
Baseball
USM 6, Bowdoin 4
BRUNSWICK – The University of Southern Maine won a weather-shortened contest against Bowdoin Wednesday, 6-4.
With the game deadlocked at one apiece entering the fifth inning, the Polar Bears (10-5) scraped together the go-ahead run on a two-out single by Ricky Leclerc, scoring Chris McCaan from second base to give Bowdoin a 2-1 edge. As the weather worsened, the Huskies (7-7) strung together the decisive rally in the top of the sixth.
Southern Maine loaded the bases with one out and deadlocked the game on a sacrifice fly from Nick Vadaro, scoring Joe Ganley from third base to tie the game at two. Chris Burleson singled to score Jordan Yanni from second base to give the Huskies a 3-2 edge before four straight walks tacked on three more runs to give Southern Maine a 6-2 advantage.
Bowdoin rallied in the bottom of the frame in what would be their final at-bat, as a passed ball scored Nick Lawler and Chris McCann’s single plated Jeremy Kraushar to make it 6-4. But John Lawrie flied out to end the inning and the contest was called due to deteriorating playing conditions.
