CUMBERLAND FORESIDE — George Phillippe Raynald Roy died on Wednesday, Nov. 22, at The Mooring on Foreside in Cumberland Foreside, after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Ray, as he was known, was born on Sept. 10, 1935, in Lewiston, the son of Georges and Stella Carrier Roy.

He graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School and St. Dominic High School in Lewiston, from St. Michael’s College in Winooski, Vt., and from the University of Maryland’s Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. After completing a three-year program in oral surgery at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Conn., and Tufts University in Boston, he joined Dr. Edmond A. Lebel in the practice of oral surgery and practiced oral surgery in Lewiston for 30 years. He served in many capacities at both St. Mary’s Hospital and Central Maine Medical Center, including chief of the medical staff at CMMC. He also served on CMMC’s board of directors.

A hockey enthusiast, Ray was one of the founders of organized youth hockey in the Lewiston-Auburn area. He coached several youth hockey teams and became the unofficial doctor for any player who became hurt while he was in the arena. He often sutured lacerations in the dressing room. He also became chairman of the board for the Central Maine Youth Center.

Ray served in the U.S. Army Reserves and volunteered in several other organizations, often becoming president or chairman of the board.

Ray was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Loretta Soucy; and a brother, Robert. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marguerite Pare Roy. He also leaves three sons: Denis and wife, Susan of Mill Valley, Calif., Marc and wife, Beverly of South Freeport, Jean of Newburyport, Mass.; and one daughter, Michele and husband, Rick Battistini of Tewksbury, Mass., and South Freeport. He also leaves two granddaughters, Louise and Taylor; and six grandsons, Christopher, Zachary, Nicholas, Cameron, Austin and Tucker.
