SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Rob Stockwell had game highs of 24 points and 13 rebounds to lead Bates College to a 63-57 win over the Trinity University of Texas in the opening round of the Holiday Inn-Naismith Classic on Sunday.

Bates never led until Stockwell drained a jump shot with 2:24 left in regulation to put the Bobcats ahead 58-57. Trinity led 35-27 at halftime and held a 10-point advantage at 46-36 with 15 minutes left to play. Trinity was held scoreless over the final five minutes and 51 seconds of the game.

Stockwell and Zak Ray, who scored 18 points to go with five steals, combined to score 42 of Bates’ 63 points.

Ross Burt led Trinity (7-3) with 17 points, while Andy Bates added 13 and team highs of six rebounds and six blocked shots.

Women’s basketball

Bates 83, Springfield 51

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Jackie Powers scored a game-high 19 points and Matia Kostakis added 16 with a game-high 10 rebounds as Bates College cruised past Springfield College 83-51 in the opening round of the Holiday Inn-Naismith Classic on Sunday.

Meg Coffin added 12 points and eight rebounds, while teammate Sarah Barton had nine and nine assists for the Bobcats (5-5), who snapped a three-game losing streak.

Bates never trailed in the game, starting off with a pair of Kostakis hoops and then jumping out to a 23-4 lead in the first seven minutes of the game. The Bobcats led 44-26 at the half and outscored the Pride 39-25 in the second half.

Courtney Parvin led the Pride (5-4) with 13 points, Springfield’s only double-digit scorer.

Hockey

Babson 7, USM 1

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Babson exploded for five third-period goals en route to a 7-1 win over the University of Southern Maine in a consolation hockey game of the Middlebury College Holiday Classic at Kenyon Arena on Sunday afternoon.

J.T. Balben scored twice, and Johnny Kim, Tom Maregni and Ryan Ferguson each scored a goal in the final period for Babson, turning a tight contest into a blowout win. Beaver goals came on just six shots in the period.

Babson took a 2-0 lead with goals from Brad Baldelli in the first period and John Geverd early in the second.

Southern Maine got on the board with a power-play tally at the 14:04 mark of the second period. Marc Santuccio carried the puck behind the net before finding senior James LeBlanc on the doorstep for the quick one-timer.
