WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – Zak Ray and teammate Bryan Wholey combined for 32 points to lead Bates to a 68-54 win over William Paterson College during the first round of the 25th Annual Eastern Tip-Off Tournament on Friday evening.

Ray, a 5-foot-11 junior guard, recorded 17 points and three steals for the Bobcats (1-0), while sophomore Wholey scored 15 points.

The Pioneers (0-1) came within three during a comeback run attempt late in the first half, but was ultimately shut down by Ray’s shooting dominance.

Junior forward Luis Martinez led the Pioneers with 12 points.

Westfield 80, USM 70

WENHAM, Mass. – Sophomore guard Tony Collier scored 17 points and senior forward James Ogbunize chipped in with a double-double on 11 points and a game-high 17 rebounds to lead Westfield College to an 80-70 win over the University of Southern Maine in the first game of the Gordon College Tip-Off Tournament on Friday.

Sophomore guards Josh Daniels and Walter Phillips paced the Huskies (0-1) with 17 points each. Phillips, playing in his first game for USM, was 7-for-17 from the field and added six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Babson 71, Bowdoin 57

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Sophomore Greg Bush scored 23 points to lead Babson to a 71-57 victory over Bowdoin in the first semifinal of the 2005 Babson Invitational Tournament Friday night.

The Polar Bears (0-1) held the lead for the first 15 minutes of play, taking as much a seven-point lead when junior John Goodridge drained a 3-pointer with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. The Beavers (1-0) took its first lead on a layup by Bush with 4:45 left, and added six more points in the final three minutes to take a 31-24 lead into the break.

William and Mary 89, Maine 55

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Corey Cofield led four teammates in double-digit scoring with a team-high 19 points as William and Mary cruised to an 89-55 win over the University of Maine in men’s basketball action Friday.

Black Bear (0-1) guard Ernest Turner scored a game-high 20 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and a steal. Christian Cavanaugh contributed 13 points, while Olli Ahvenniemi chipped in with another 11 points for Maine.

Men’s hockey

Colby 4, Babson 1

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Colby College scored four unanswered goals, including three in the third period, to claim a 4-1 victory over Babson in a season-opening men’s hockey NESCAC matchup on Friday night.

The White Mules (1-0) grabbed their first lead of the game at 7:19 of the third period, when first-year Joel Covelli netted what would prove to be the game-winner. Covelli then assisted junior Greg Osborne on Colby’s third goal at 15:05, and first-year Cass Buttafuoco finished off the scoring just 23 seconds later to seal the 4-1 win.

Field hockey

Messiah 2, Bowdoin 1

LEXINGTON, Va – Jenna Schwind scored the game-winning goal at the 40:56 mark of the second half off a pass from Ashley Lobach to give Messiah a 2-1 victory over Bowdoin in the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship semifinals.

Bowdoin scored the first goal just 8:35 into the game when Margaret Gormley found the back of the net off an assist from Taryn King. Twelve minutes later, Amber Fulginiti tied the game on a rocket shot from the top of the circle.

Renee Herbster stopped six shots in net for Messiah (20-2). Bowdoin (18-1) goalkeeper Kate Leonard had 11 saves.

Women’s basketball

Maine 70, Rider 35

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Ashley Underwood drained six 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 22 points to lead University of Maine to a 70-35 victory over Rider in the season debut for both teams. The Black Bears’ Katie Whittier came through with 15 points and 13 boards for the games only double-double.

USM 75, Williams 59

FARMINGTON – Ashley Marble scored 21 points and had 13 rebounds to lead University of Southern Maine to a 75-59 victory over Williams in the season opener for both teams. Donna Cowing added 16 points along with a game-high eight steals, while Katie Frost chipped in 11 points and seven assists for the Huskies.

Colleen Hession led Williams with 19 points and four 3-pointers.

Colby 75, Newbury 38

WATERVILLE – Katie McCabe had 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting and added four rebounds to lead Colby to a 75-38 win over Newbury College in the first game of the three-team Colby Tip-Off Tournament Friday night.

The Mules (1-0) jumped out to a 36-14 halftime lead, and forced 32 turnovers in the game. Laura Williamson added 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals for Colby.

Thomas 77, UMFK 60

WATERVILLE – Freshmen Toby Martin and Talia Mondalto combined for 34 points to lead Thomas College to a 77-60 win over the University of Maine at Fort Kent in the second game of the Dead River Terrier Tip-Off Tournament Friday.

The Bengals (0-1) battled hard in the first half with the Terriers (1-0) taking a 34-30 at the midpoint. Mondalto helped the Terriers pull away as she scored four second half three-pointers to lay down the Bengals. Amanda Davis led the scoring for the Bengals with 17 points and five rebounds in the loss.

Bates 79, Mt. Holyoke 65

WALTHAM, Mass. – Val Beckwith tore up the floor with 20 points to lead Bates to a 79-65 win over Mount Holyoke in women’s basketball action Friday.

The Bobcats (1-0) received offensive support from Annie Whiting and Kyla Decato, who provided 16 and 11 points respectively, toward the season opening win. Mount Holyoke (0-1) outpaced the Bobcats in the second half with a 40-34 margin, but could not overcome a 20-point first-half deficit.Christine Godin led Mount Holyoke (0-1) with 18 points in the loss.

Women’s hockey

Connecticut 5, Colby 2

WATERVILLE – The Connecticut College women’s hockey team scored three goals in a span of 43 seconds in the opening period on the way to a 5-2 victory over Colby College in the season opener Friday night.

Despite being outshot 42-17, the Camels (1-0) capitalized early with goals from Jill Mauer, Elizabeth Bennett and Suzie Connor to take a 3-1 lead after the first period.

The Mules (0-1) were paced by Laura Anning and Rebecca Julian with one goal and assists apiece.
