ORONO – Maine exploded for a five-goal first period as the University of Maine Black Bears cruised to their fourth win of the season with a 12-1 pounding of Sacred Heart in women’s hockey action on Friday.

The Black Bears (4-2-1) began their dominance a little more than two minutes into the game.

After forward Brigitte Laflamme won a face-off deep in the Pioneer (0-3-1) end, she fed the puck to freshman Vanessa Vani, who scored her first of two goals on the night for a 1-0 lead. Laflamme’s assist was her first of three on the evening.

Danielle Trangredi pitched in with a pair of goals for Maine, and Sheri Wauters capped off the rout with the final two goals.

In the second period, the Pioneers were able to score a goal to climb within four goals, but the Black Bears pounded out eight unanswered goals over the remaining period and a half for the win.
