GORHAM – Julia Cyr scored the winning goal in the sixth minute of overtime to lift Southern Maine to a 2-1 victory over the University of New England in a women’s soccer match Wednesday.

A throw-in down the left side sent Liz Brunton to the end line, from where she crossed the ball across the goal mouth. Cyr got her foot to the ball to deflect it into the net for the game-winner.

The Nor’easters made the best of their offensive opportunity in the match with less than four minutes to play to draw even at 1-1. Amanda Smith brought the ball down the left side and pushed a pass forward to Melissa Lavasseur. Lavasseur fended off a USM defender and sent a bouncing shot across the goal into the far corner.

The Huskies (2-1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when Dianna Thibaudeau got her body on a cross from Cyr and deflected the ball into the net.

St. Joseph’s 8, Thomas 0

STANDISH – Megan Willette and Katie Jordan combined for seven goals Wednesday to lead St. Joseph’s to a 8-0 romp over Thomas.

Jordan led all scorers with four goals, while Willette posted three. Lauren Blaha also tallied for the Monks (1-0) to complete the scoring. Morgan Merserve needed only three saves to record the shutout.

UNE 2, St. Joe’s 1

STANDISH-Jillian Croteau and Lisa Baillargeon each scored as the University of New England tripped up St. Joseph’s, 2-1.

Croteau deflected a blistering shot from Amy Williams past Monks keeper Ellen Gagne for the early score, and Baillargeon netted the decisive tally on a pass from Sarah Goudreau.

St. Joe’s mounted a frenzied comeback in the second half, finally capitalizing on a 15-4 advantage in shots in the second frame with a goal by Monique Crawford.

Men’s Soccer

Husson 5, UMaine-Machias 2

BANGOR – Kliton Xhemali netted a pair of goals and the Eagles blew open a close game with three goals in the second half as Husson downed Machias, 5-2.

Chris Cacela scored the eventual game-winner in the 54th minute and added an assist for Husson (1-2). Shawn Coffin also chipped in with a goal and an assist.

Andrew Hayes and Michael Zeilder scored goals within minutes of each other as Machias (1-2) took a 2-1 lead in the first half.

Northeastern 2, Maine 0

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Freshman forward Ben Levy had a hand in both goals, scoring and adding an assist as Northeastern blanked Maine, 2-0.

Sergio Saccoccio only needed three saves to backstop the Huskies to their first win of the season, their second straight game without a goal against.

Levy picked up a through ball from Jonathan Snow and lobbed a shot over the head of Black Bears goalie Chad Mongeon. Levy’s cross to Greg Killenny resulted in the second tally.

Mongeon stopped eight shots for Maine.
