LEWISTON – Adam Staier, a Senior at the University of Maine at Farmington, and Sara Adams, a sophomore at Lisbon High, recently won the 5,000-meter racewalk championship race. Staier completed the circuit in 28 minutes followed by Boothbay’s 13-year-old racewalking wonder Matthew Forgues, who came in at 28:58. Harrison’s Dave Baldwin finished at 29:07.

Forgues just returned from earning the silver medal in the Youth Boys JO championships in Indianapolis. In the girls’ race, Adams, walking her first state meet 5,000-meter race, finished in a respectable 37:47 to capture first place.

In other racewalking events, Forgues placed a strong second in the 3,000-meter Youth Boys championship race recently held Indianapolis. Matthew’s time of 15:32.77 was four seconds behind the winner and 28 seconds in front of third place.

Also racing from Maine in the intermediate boys’ 5,000-meter racewalk were Taylor Burns from Scarborough (28:53.17) and Aaron Carroll from Gardiner (30:24.85) for fifth- and sixth-place medals, respectively. In the oldest race category, Padric Gleason of Dresden finished in a personal record time of 26:49.93 to capture the fourth-place medal. The four boys competing from Maine brought home four championship medals.

Two girls represented Maine well at the JO Championships. Sarah Peak from Farmington (33:44.14) and Sarah Whitney from Lincoln (34:06.03) finished seventh and eighth in the Young Women’s 5,000-meter racewalk behind a strong field.
