WESTBROOK, Maine (AP) – A Westbrook, Maine woman is hoping to swim across the English Channel.

Fifty-eight-year-old Pat Gallant-Charette tried to do it last summer and was less than two miles away when the swim was called off. A riptide kept her essentially swimming in place for four hours.

The Portland Press Herald reports she hopes to start her swim again on Thursday. Swimmers have a limited time slot to make their attempt, and many times weather conditions delay, or even prevent, the feat.

A registered nurse and a grandmother, she has been training four to six hours a day, three days a week at the Casco Bay YMCA in Freeport.

Gallant-Charette started swimming competitively as a tribute to her brother, Robbie Gallant, who died from heart problems in 1997 at age 34.
