STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Kristen Burst launched a three-run home run in the 13th inning to give Stony Brook a 3-0 victory over the University of Maine in softball action on Friday.
Sarah Bennis had 14 strikeouts, while Jess Brady had two of the Black Bears’ (16-26) five hits.
Following a three-up, three-down top of the 13th for Maine, the Seawolves (21-35) led off with a walk.
Next up, Jane Stein safely reached first on a bunt before Ashley Westphal advanced the runners on a sacrifice bunt. Burst capped the game with a three-run shot over the left-center field fence.
Baseball
Eastern Connecticut 9, USM 5
MANSFIELD, Conn. – Eastern Connecticut State University scored four unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning to snap a 5-5 tie and eliminate the University of Southern Maine with a 9-5 victory in the 2005 LEC Baseball Championship Tournament on Friday.
In the decisive eighth inning, the Huskies (25-14) nearly got out of a two-out, bases-loaded jam, but an infield error allowed two runs to score. Junior outfielder Marc Garofalo followed with a double to plate two additional runs for the Warriors (30-12).
Southern Maine made it interesting in the ninth, loading the bases on three singles, but sophomore second baseman Joe Ganley flied out to deep center field to end the ball game.
The Huskies tied the game at 5-5 in the seventh as freshman outfielder Eddie Skeffington doubled with one out and scored on Tip Fairchild’s two-out single. Skeffington paced the Huskies’ offense with four hits.
St. Joe’s 7, Husson 1
STANDISH – Senior Greg Kimball pitched a complete game, striking out seven and allowing only one run as St. Joseph’s defeated Husson 7-1 in the North Atlantic Conference Championship on Friday afternoon.
Junior Jason Harvey scored the Eagles’ (25-17) only run of the game in the first inning. The Monks (32-9) went to work in the bottom of the inning as senior Derek McIntosh singled and junior Ben Muniz crushed a two-run shot over the right field fence to go up 2-1.
Seniors Aaron Cieslak and Jake Rodden both singled, and St. Joe’s added a run in the second inning on a throwing error to first by the pitcher Mike Cowperthwaite.
The Monks went up 5-1 in the third inning as freshman Charlie Furbush scored on an error and Rodden singled to score freshman Luke Enman.
Rodden finished 3-for-4 and notched his third single of the game in the fifth inning to score Muniz.
