LEWISTON – Trinity cranked out a pair of wins, 7-2 and 14-1, over Bates College in doubleheader baseball action.
In the first game, the Bobcats (2-8) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. With one out, Brian Mahoney reached second on an outfield error, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Adam Worral’s single to left.
The Bantams (16-2) exploded in the fifth inning for five runs on three hits and a Bates error. Trinity added two more runs in the seventh off relief pitcher Dan Bousquet.
Bates scored first again in Game 2 when leadoff batter Kyohai Yamada scored on a hit from Engasser. That was the extent to the Bobcats’ scoring as Trinity scored nine runs in the third and fourth innings.
USM takes two
GORHAM – Southern Maine received a pair of complete-game pitiching efforts from Tip Fairchild and Peter Bergeron to hand Rhode Island College a pair of losses.
The Huskies (9-4, 1-0) took the first game 12-1 behind a stellar pitching performance by Fairchild (four hits, 10 strikeouts).
Eddie Skeffington paced the Huskies 18-hit attack with four safeties while Brandon Brewer, and Joe McGhee chipped in with three hits each.
The nightcap saw Bergeron scatter seven hits and two walks while striking out seven.
Bowdoin sweeps Colby
WATERVILLE – Bowdoin College stormed back from an early deficit after three innings en route to a 16-5 win in the nightcap to complete a sweep over Colby.
The Polar Bears belted five home runs in the opener to take a 17-1 victory. Nick Lawler carried the big stick in the opener with a pair of home runs and four RBIs, while Tyler Turgeon added a double.
Game 2 saw Ricky Leclerc blast a pair of homers and a double, while Lawler added a pair of doubles in the lopsided win.
Leclerc and Patrick Driscoll picked up his wins.
Softball
Bowdoin, Trinity split
HARTFORD, Conn. – Dannielle Chagnon and Brittaney Ogden hit a pair of solo home runs to lift Bowdoin College to a 3-2 win in the first game of a twin bill against Trinity.
Katie Neilson had 14 strike outs surendering a single earned run in the win.
Game 2 saw Trinity bounce back with a 2-1 win behind pitcher Victoria Mosher.
Tufts sweeps Bates
MEDFORD, Mass. – Sarah Conroy and Lauren Ebstein earned pitching victories as Tufts swept Bates, 4-1 and 6-3.
In the first game, the Jumbos (13-3) scored three times in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead. Freshman Erica Bailey led off with a double to get things started.
Bates’ freshman Alex Bethel had a pair of hits for the Bobcats (4-4), while pitcher Sarah Klenakis allowed four hits in the losing effort.
Game 2 featured more firepower as both teams combined for 20 hits.
The Jumbos took a 4-2 margin with a two-out home run by Mara Dodson in the bottom of the fifith inning. The Bobcats again got to within a run at 4-3 in the sixth on a single by senior co-captain Erin Foye, but the potential tying run was cut down at the plate.
Junior first baseman Kyla Decato of Paris and Foye had two hits apiece for Bates.
Men’s lacrosse
Bowdoin 9, Wesleyan 3
BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin College erupted for four second quarter goals to send Wesleyan University to a 9-3 setback in men’s lacrosse action.
Holding a slim 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter Alex Weaver turned in a hat trick and an assist propelling them to the lopside victory.
Connecticut 8, Bates 7
LEWISTON – Dave Schwartz drilled the winning goal with 2:51 left in the fifth overtime to send Connecticut College to an 8-7 win over Bates in NESCAC men’s lacrosse action.
The Bobcats (8-1) led 3-2 heading into the second quarter and extended its lead to 5-2 on goals by Justin Simon and David Pritchard. Robbie Logan scored late in the half to pull the Camels (4-6) to within two, 5-3.
Bates opened the scoring in the second half on Matt Erisman’s unassisted goal. However, Connecticut responed with a three-goal run, tying the game with three minutes remaining.
With 1:23 on the clock, Simon scored to give the Bobcats a 7-6 lead, but Schwartz sent the game into overtime on a tally with 31 seconds left in regulation.
Women’s lacrosse
W.Connecticut 7, USM 6
DANBURY, Conn. – Shannon Healy scored an overtime goal to provide the Colonials with their first win of the season as Western Connecticut captured the 7-6 victory over Southern Maine.
In the second half, the Huskies regained the lead on an equalizer from Sarah Proulx from Hebron and the go-ahead from Emily Kirkland. Kirkland again put the Huskies (1-5) ahead, following a Colonial goal, at 9:18 and completed the hat trick with just 57 seconds remaining to force overtime.
Jenna Waslyak and Katie Quartuccio combined to turn back 14 shots for the Huskies.
Amherst 13, Colby 9
AMHERST, Mass. – The third-ranked Amherst College women’s lacrosse team scored seven unanswered goals over a span of 18 minutes in the first half, and held off Colby College after the break to notch a 13-9 victory Satuday.
The Mules (7-2) took a 2-1 lead early in the matchup on a pair of free-position goals by junior Elizabeth Ghilardi. The Jeffs (5-0) reeled off seven scores before junior Kelsey Neville stopped the run with 1:17 left in the half.
, to enter intermission trailing 8-3.
Colby gained momentum after the break, notching three straight goals, including a pair from sophomore Allie Libby to close the gap to 8-6. Amherst scored five of the next six goals before Lauren Barrett closed out the contest with a pair, recording four goals in the loss.
